Located inside the Palace of Justice, it is beautiful inside, but what really draws attention are the magnificent stained glass windows.

It was built to receive some relics such as fragments of the crown of thorns and the cross of Jesus on the Calvary that today, they say, is found in Notre Dame de Paris.

Don't miss the chance to attend a concert, without a doubt an unforgettable experience.

Unmissable! Don't be intimidated by the queue (security issue). It's worth waiting a little bit.

A little bit of history...

Louis IX, the French king, actually built the chapel (the Sainte-Chapelle was built in record time – between 1241 and 1248) to house the valuable holy relics he had acquired.  The chapel would then be a great and wonderful reliquary, the most beautiful of all... In the Middle Ages, it was very common to buy these relics, which were kept and displayed in precious scapulars.

Considered a masterpiece of Gothic art, the Sainte-Chapelle is a symbol of how royalty and religion were closely linked. Even its interior is decorated with fabrics embroidered with the fleur de lis, which is the symbol of the French monarchy. The chapel was built on two floors of the same area, but with different heights. The first floor (Chapelle Basse), simpler, was frequented by employees and local residents, the second, with its 15 magnificent stained glass windows - a set of unparalleled beauty of art in the Middle Ages, where biblical scenes were portrayed, was frequented only by the royal family. and some guests. In the upper chapel (Chapelle Haute) the sacred treasures were kept.

Between fires and a major flood, the chapel survived. But it was at the time of the French Revolution that it suffered the most severe attacks... Looted and used as a warehouse for grain and food, as well as an office, it was one of the biggest targets of the rebellion for being, let's say, one of the representations of French royalty in Paris. Valuable works of art, furniture, decorative objects and various gems were destroyed or melted down. Very little of what was left and recovered was returned to the chapel. Some parts are in museums, mostly in France and England.

Details of the chapel interior

With all the flaws, incredibly, two-thirds of the stained glass windows are original.

Between 1840 and 1868, Sainte-Chapelle underwent extensive and accurate restoration. The architects, defending the preservation of the heritage, restore the chapel to its original appearance, from the 13th century. This restoration of the patrimony, as it was, is the object of zeal in all the repairs that are carried out until today.

Recently, in 2015, a restoration work started in 2008 was completed. This careful work gave more life to the stained glass windows due to the careful cleaning they underwent. Thus, with the chapel “tinkling”, the 800th birthday of King Louis IX, canonized  in 1297, then becoming known as Saint Louis (Saint Louis).

The photos cannot convey the real beauty of the place...

If you want to enjoy the stained glass windows in all their splendor, try to go on a sunny day. Morning or afternoon are the best times.

The lines are almost always long, you have to go through strict security, as the chapel is part of the complex where the Palais de la Justice is located, which houses the main institutions of the French judicial system.

You can buy the combined ticket with the Conciergerie, and the attraction is also part of the Paris Museum Pass. Depending on what you're going to visit, it's worth it.

Paris Museum Passes can be purchased online, but you will need to choose a designated location to pick up your ticket. The most practical is to buy at airports, at train stations (Gare du Nord, Gare de L'Est or Gare de Lyon) or at certain places specified on the website: http://www.parismuseumpass.com/ .
