The friendly and unmissable museum is made up of the mansion (Hôtel), the chapel and the sculpture garden.
The Hôtel Biron (named after one of the former owners) reopened its doors, completely renovated, in November 2015 - after years of work, meeting the precepts of a modern museum, including accessibility regulations. Coating, flooring, lighting and furniture were restored, respecting architectural coherence and, of course, giving more life to the works on display.
A little of history...
The Hôtel Biron, a precious mansion of Rococo architecture, was completed in the first half of the 13th century. Since then, the mansion's facade has changed very little...
In 1820, the entire property was sold to three nuns, and the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an educational institution for girls, was founded on the site.
Between 1820 and 1904, many buildings were built for the adaptation of a place of religious teaching, including the Chapel.
In 1904, the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is dissolved and forced to leave the properties and sell them.
Meanwhile, waiting for its sale, the property was rented to several artists, such as the writer Jean Cocteau, the painter Henri Matisse, the dancer Isadora Duncan, among others.
In 1908, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) rented four rooms on the ground floor to work and exhibit his works.
In 1911, when the property was sold to the French State, everyone withdrew from the place, except Rodin, who was still working there... Well, in order not to leave, he offered his works to the state in exchange for living there his whole life. The State would also be responsible for creating the Rodin Museum (an old dream of the artist) on the site.
The government accepted, the works were donated and the museum, opened in 1919, has works by Auguste Rodin, Camille Claudel, as well as paintings, sculptures and old works from Rodin's collections, by other artists.
The building and its gardens were classified as historic monuments in 1926.
Renovation of the Hôtel Biron (between 2012 and 2015)
The renovation of the building's structure was also the opportunity for a major overhaul of the visit to the museum.
Today, where the old chapel once stood, there is a temporary exhibition hall, an auditorium, a boutique and offices.
